This brooch is inspired by a Bakelite brooch from the 1930s. Bakelite—first discovered in Yonkers in 1907—was the first synthetically made plastic, and jewelry and accessories made from Bakelite became a massive trend throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Shades of yellow, especially the butterscotch shade reproduced here, were the most commonly produced color.
